Fall line up… Leaf rubbings

This Fall I decided to do something different with my platters.  Inspired from the beautiful Fall leaves and nature, I am focusing this line on organic material.  When I was a child growing up in New England , I would take leaves and put a piece of paper over them.  Soothingly, I would rub the flat edge of a pencil over the paper that sat on top of the leaf.  This would leave the image of the leaf on the paper.  I always found it to be so cool and fun.  I use this idea now on my clay.  I find this method to be  very zen like.  From finding the proper leaf that has good veins to leave...

Inspiration 5 and 6… Harder Kulm and the views of Interlaken

As cliche as it sounds, hiking a mountain in Switzerland has been at the head of my bucket list.  Last month we were strolling thru Interlaken Switzerland and couldn't help but notice the mountain trail we stumbled into.  Turns out it was Harder Kulm.  Impulsively, I told the kids and John that we had to hike it, even though we were dressed in shopping clothes.  We did have  a change of clothes in the car, so I made everyone change in the parking lot and join me for what looked like a simple hike.  John did point out the sign that said it would take approximately 2 1/2 hour to hike up.  I assured...

The birth of a vessel

I am not one for documenting my work.  But, for this piece I wanted to show my client the birth of her Raku vessel.  I sometimes get attached to my work and find it hard to sell certain pieces.  It is like giving away a child.  But then I see how happy it makes my client, as if they have just adopted a child.  I always feel better when I know my piece is going to a good home : )   This is an example of  Jane's vessel from greenware, to bisqueware, to finished product.  Raku clay bisque fires to a peachy color.  This piece had a post firing reduction and came out without any cracks....

Inspiration #4… The lavender fields in Gordes

For those of you that do not know, the last 2 weeks of July is peak lavender season in France.  This is when the lavender is in full bloom and the color is at it's peak.  In August the lavender get's harvested.  A few years ago I pinned up this very spot on Pinterest.  I truly thought the picture was fake.  I actually think discovering the lavender fields on Pinterest is what got me hooked on Pinterest  itself.  (Note to self.. get on Pinterest again, it has been awhile).  The photos are from L'Abbaye de Senanque in Gordes France.  During my stay in Aix en Provence, I decided to look...

Local support from Kathleen Van Bergen of Artis-Naples

Last month Kathleen, the CEO  from Artis-Naples (Formerly known as Naples Philharmonic), was searching for a gift for a special client of hers.  I am so honored that she came to me to create a custom platter for her  client.  She wanted a chocolate tone glaze that would suit her clients Tuscan style home.  Getting the support from locals means so much to me.  I crave the support from our local retailers as well as restaurants.  Think of how amazing this town of  Naples could be if we all supported each others business.  Getting the support from Kathleen says so much about her intentions....

Inspiration #3… Lace from France!! ( Aix en Provence)

I scored big in Aix en Provence!  One of the main reasons I travel to Europe in the summer is to hunt for unusual vintage lace.  This summer I found this sweet woman with a huge collection of beautiful inspiring lace.  I was able to acquire about 35 pieces to take home.  I can't wait to use them.  This year... I think creating large organic shaped flower pots will be a focus for me.  Of course, my new lace is a huge inspiration for these vessels. Flowers are sold on every street corner in France.  The containments for the flowers were just as pretty as the flowers themselves.  I also...

Inspiration #2… Switzerland! (Lungern)

Seriously my new favorite country.   It's unembellished beauty sits mocking me, laughing in my face.  If ever I were to be jealous of nature, it would be now.  I will never be able to create anything inspired from this country that will do it  justice.  The plethora of stunning, peaceful, and tranquil works of art are around every corner.  Created by nature, it waits to be noticed.  Upon discovery, it haughtily glances back at me.  Are you kidding me?? I have never been evoked on this level before.  I believe it just really took me by surprise.  Two of my friends are from here, they...
