Bon Voyage!

Dear Tovari Friends: Tomorrow we will be departing for a 21 day inspiration and connection trip to Switzerland, Paris, London and Spain.  I feel so fortunate to receive this trip as a birthday present from "hunky" John David.  In light of my upcoming birthday, it was my wish to explore Europe with my children.  They must see that we are a speck in the world, maybe they will become motivated to set goals and learn gratitude!  I look forward to creating life long memories and bonding experiences with them.  Even if it is, "I can't believe I am stuck with you bratty kids in Europe for 3 weeks...

Saturday sunbathing at Tovari

I look forward to the Saturdays where the skies are sunny and I can wash my wares and jump in the pool!  The tall vase is the  replacement piece for the one I dropped and cracked.  I believe everything happens for a reason, as I actually like this one better than the initial one made for my client.  I have been working on developing my style thru the years.  Sometimes I find it is hard to create what I see in my head.  I will be very disappointed if this Raku vase does not fire well... as I feel it represents years of creating a sense of movement in my clay.  It also is a very close...

I am humbled…

I had been working on this piece for several weeks.  It is a commissioned piece for a client of mine that is very dear to me.  After playing with the shape for several weeks, I had her come over to approve it.  Now ,we all know that you can never really predict the outcome of a piece when it comes to Raku.   There are no guarantees that the piece will survive the firing and be free of cracks and fractures.  The one thing I could always depend on was myself, and my ability to pull heavy objects from the intensely hot kiln.  This time I was humbled.  It had been awhile since I had raku...

He loves me.. he really loves me!

John left yesterday to run some errands and came back with this lucky find.  They are ALMOST better than coming home with jewelry : )  It so so hard to find red glass bottles for my melted glass eccentricities.  I remain passionate about using recycled glass on my work.  I have found that perrier bottles melt very well and hold their color, similar to the blue french water bottles I have been using.  I have never seen these french sparkling water bottles!  I must  admit, they might be my new obsession and not just because of the color.  They are busting with effervescent tiny bubbles....

An afternoon with Kathleen Van Bergen…I am so lucky!

Yesterday I had the pleasure of entertaining a very special guest, Kathleen Van Bergen CEO of Artis-Naples.  I was already impressed when Kathleen asked to come by my studio  on her day off.  After spending an afternoon with her, it is clear that this woman is more than capable of running and making changes to the re-organized Artis-Naples.  Lovely, confident, engaged, in touch with the world, highly(overly) qualified, effective, courageous, sincere and just plain fun, are a few words I would use to describe Kathleen.   It is hard to make changes in a small town where everyone wants change,...

So excited for tomorrow!! Kathleen is coming to Tovari’s studio, Kathleen Van Bergen!!

As many of you know, The Naples Philharmonic has a new CEO along with a new name.  Now Artis-Naples and  under the new direction of Kathleen Van Bergen.  I'm not saying I like the new name, but let's all get over it and move forward.  I have already seen positive changes.  Many months ago I met the very busy Kathleen Van Bergen and invited her to my home/studio.  I must admit, we all had bets that she would never really attempt to come.  I received an email a few weeks ago from Kathleen and then her assistant regarding visiting and setting up an appointment.  I really was so shocked that...

Before… Glazed and ready for a Raku firing

These two pieces are painted with the same glaze.  I am hoping for a white crackle and silver.  I have found that the whites are typically a sure thing when it comes to Raku firing results.  I will be adding my signature post firing reduction tricks to try and get silver flashings on these pieces.  Wish me luck!!  I am so excited, I have been doing a lot of earthenware lately.  Missing that rush and excitement of Raku firing.  Picks to follow soon.
